2015 National Lost Dog Awareness Day

Palm Valley Animal Center will be celebrating National Lost Dog Awareness Day on Thursday, April 23, 2015 from 11am-6pm at 2501 West Trenton Road, Edinburg, TX 78539 by offering microchipping for dogs and cats at $12 per pet. You must mention National Lost Dog Awareness Day to receive the microchip discounted price, only valid on Thursday, April 23, 2015.

Over the past forty years the Palm Valley Animal Center’s Lost & Found Program has tirelessly worked to reunite families with their lost pets and encourage pet owners to use every available tool to safeguard their pets in case they are lost. In 2014, PVAC reunited over 1,400 pets with their loving families and just in the first three months of 2015 has reunited 439 pets, 56 more than last year. PVAC is dedicated to reuniting families and offers microchipping at a reduced price for the general public year round.

Oliver, a golden brown terrier adult male was admitted to PVAC in early March as a stray, but little was known about the dog given ID number 25153655, but thanks to his owners foresight the PVAC staff was able to contact them using his microchip. After several days of being away from home, countless hours of searching by his family, and a phone call by the PVAC staff, Oliver was back home where he belongs. Oliver was lucky to have such caring and responsible pet owners who took the time to microchip him and keep the contact information on the microchip up to date.

“First and foremost, microchip your pets! An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you don’t have a microchip, ensure your pet has current tags and always update your contact information to ensure that you can be reached.” Robert Russell, PVAC Director of Operations.

If your family is searching for a lost pet, search your neighborhood multiple times a day, check with neighbors, post flyers with pictures of your pet in your area, and at area veterinary clinics, if allowed. Alert your veterinarian that your pet is missing and visit your local shelter daily, if possible. While Palm Valley Animal Center provides services for all of Hidalgo County, the cities of Edinburg, Mission & Pharr operate their own holding facilities in addition to using PVAC, so be sure to check with these municipalities as well.

If you recently found a pet and would like to assist in reuniting it with its family, please take the pet to a local veterinarian or bring them by Palm Valley Animal Center to be scanned for a microchip. We encourage and welcome our community to post a flyer on the lost & found wall. PVAC is open to the public 362 days out of the year to owners searching for their lost pet and/or to scan any found pet for a microchip.
